在緬甸總理烏努(U  Nu)與政府的支持下，南傳上座部「第六次結集」(Chaṭṭha Saṅgāyana)於 1954 年 5 月 17 日在緬甸仰光召開。其目的是要確保三藏的純正性。共有來自緬甸、柬埔寨、印度、竂國、尼泊爾、斯里蘭卡、泰國、越南的二千五百位上座部比丘參與。

馬哈西尊者在此次結集中負起「提問者」(Pucchaka)的任務，負責以巴利語發問——在第一次結集中，這工作乃由迦葉尊者負責。20 世紀緬甸第一位能夠記憶巴利三藏的持三藏者──明貢尊者(Mingun Tipiṭakadhāra Sayadaw, U Vicittasara, 1911-1992)，扮演如同阿難尊者的角色，負責以巴利語回答問題。
